GradCru Bible Studies are Bible Studies Plus+ Groups. More than general discussions of the Bible where you end up talking afterwards about your research, they are intentionally designed for a close examination of Scripture — “plus” an emphasis on specific applications relevant to your life and concerns as a graduate student in the midst of the University. GradCru groups have a leader and co-leader who are prepared to guide a lively, engaging discussion.
• During the academic year GradCru groups are smaller and specific for men and women. During the summer months we normally offer one large mixed group for all who are in Ann Arbor.
• The men’s groups are led by men for men, often talking about issues that graduate men uniquely face.
• The women’s groups are led by women for women, often talking about issues that graduate women uniquely face.
• Authentic community is vitally important, so we provide many ministry opportunities and social interactions to build the GradCru community at U-M.
GradCru Bible Study Plus+ Groups are open to all U-M Master, Ph.D. and Professional School graduate students, and Post-Docs and Visiting Scholars. No prior Bible Study group experience is needed. Groups most likely will have graduate students from a variety of spiritual backgrounds and levels of spiritual development.
If you don’t consider yourself a Christian at this time, but are interested to discuss the Bible with others, we also have groups for those who would like to investigate the Bible, Jesus Christ and Christianity. Click here for more information about the GradCru Investigative Bible Study Groups.
Men’s Bible Study Plus+ Groups:
We anticipate continuing and starting three men’s groups this fall. As more men express interest, we will add new groups.
- MONDAYS: 7:30 to 9:00 pm on North Campus. This group will be led by GradCru Staff member Dr. Chuck Roeper and graduate student Andrew Sloboda.
- TUESDAYS: 8:00 to 9:30 pm. Location and Discussion Leaders: TBD.
- WEDNESDAYS: 8:00 to 9:30 pm. Location and Discussion Leaders: TBD.
This fall semester 2010 the men’s groups will examine and discuss the New Testament book of James. Referencing the study materials of nationally-known author, speaker and pastor, Rev. Tim Keller, some of the topics we will examine from James are:
• Two Basic Kinds of Trouble • The Benefits of Facing Trouble • Sin and Temptation • Grace and New Birth • Growth Through Hearing Truth • Growth Through Obeying Truth • A Lifestyle of Justice, Mercy and Faith • Wise Relationships • Courage, Communication, Worry, Materialism • Patience and Prayer of Faith
As we get to know one another, we talk below the surface about our lives as graduate student men and pray for one another. There is no homework or preparation (you already have enough prep to do). Each group also might adjust the time they start and end to accommodate all the schedules of the men in the group (earlier or later in the evening). We typically meet at the apartment of one of the men in the group and have light refreshments at the beginning. This casual environment helps to build friendships and good conversation.

Women’s Bible Study+ Groups:
We are excited for these women’s groups to begin! Grad school is such a unique subculture, unlike any other in life (including being an undergraduate). We will discuss how the New Testament book of James applies to the unique concerns and challenges that we face as women in grad school. We want our time together to be open, discussion-oriented, practical, and Bible-based. It’s a great place to make friends, be a part of a caring community, pray together, and be equipped to minister to others more effectively.
The Women’s Bible Study Plus+ Groups probably will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, starting at 7:30 pm. (The time is subject to change if needed.) We hope that you will come and check us out!
