English Speaking Club (ESC)

The English Speaking Club (ESC) is for International graduate students. All Master, Ph.D. and Professional School graduate students are welcome, and Post-Docs and Visiting Scholars, too.

Join with other International and native English-speaking graduate students to practice your English conversation skills. Each Thursday afternoon in Pierpont Commons we discuss in groups idioms and slang, American culture and holidays, and job interview skills to help you feel more confident speaking in English. We have great fun together at the ESC Meetings and we have great fun together at the ESC Parties we have each semester, often in nearby American homes. (click here for the fall ESC Parties.)

The English Speaking Club meets most Thursdays in The Center Room in Pierpont Commons on the U-M North Campus. (locator map, then click on the “2″ before the “2-Center”)

The ESC Mixer is from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Come anytime during the Mixer to meet new people and talk with one another in English. Each week during the Mixer we will give you three new English idiom cards to discuss and learn. By the end of the academic year, you will have learned 60 common English idioms and will be able to use them in conversation.

Then the ESC Meeting is from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. We usually break into smaller groups, with each group led by a native English-speaking graduate student to help you discuss the topic for the day. The ESC is not a formal class, but meant to be conversational and interactive — and fun! We laugh often.

We hope you will come and bring your friends. It always is interesting to meet graduate students from around the world. Grad students have come to the ESC who are from: Canada, China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Viet Nam — and the USA. Each week more International graduate students subscribe to the ESC Group Email List.

To learn more about the ESC and know details about the Meetings and Parties:

  1. Become a FaceBook Fan of the ESC. In Facebook, search for “English Speaking Club @ University of Michigan.”
  2. Subscribe to receive the ESC Group Emails. We send one email every week to tell everyone about upcoming ESC Meetings and Parties. If you would like to receive the ESC Group Emails, provide your email address and your first and last name in the text boxes at the top right of this webpage (see the clipboard labeled “Get ESC Emails”) and then click on “Subscribe.” It is an automated group list so you can self-subscribe. (Every ESC email you receive will provide simple instructions so you can automatically delete your subscription if sometime you no longer want to receive the ESC Group Emails.) We hope you will subscribe!

(We also have a clipboard labeled “Get GradCru Emails” elsewhere in the website for everything else GradCru does, so don’t get the two clipboards confused. To receive the ESC emails, use the “Get ESC Emails” clipboard above on the top right of this page.)
  3. View fun photos of the ESC in the ESC Photo Gallery!

The English Speaking Club (ESC) is a free service of GradCru, the graduate student ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. There is no obligation, expectation, or pressure to be involved in any activities or events that GradCru offers. Because many who are involved with the ESC are interested, a few times each semester we do inform the entire ESC about opportunities that GradCru offers. You are welcome to participate if you desire. Email esc.umich@gradcru.org for more information.
